It's all about farming, not just training.

The purposeful approach that turns potential into powerhouse leaders!

Throughout my career as both a corporate leader and facilitator-coach, I have passionately advocated for a concept that has proven essential for driving meaningful and sustainable change: Behavioural Agronomythe art and science of behavioural change.

Behavioural Agronomy as a concept involves more than just leadership competencies; it emphasises understanding and facilitating productive behaviours through time-tested, experience-driven, and reflective discovery. This approach starkly contrasts with the "industrial engineering" method, where a one-size-fits-all, mass-market training pedagogy is used to force behaviour change. Instead, Behavioural Agronomy requires a thoughtful, personalised approach, much like farming, where each step is carefully considered to nurture growth.

But how can this approach be institutionalised in organisations?

Cultivating Leadership with Behavioural Agronomy

LEAP programs are designed to institutionalise the principles of Behavioural Agronomy, ensuring that potential leaders are nurtured, supported, and developed in a way that leads to lasting success.

Here’s how we do it:

1. Don’t Just Sow the Seed and Hope the Plant Will Grow on Its Own

  • Strategy: Long-Term Leadership Development Plans

    • In our LEAP programs, we don’t just initiate leadership development with a single workshop or training session. We create long-term development journeys that include continuous learning, coaching, mentorship, and real-world applications. This ensures that the seeds of leadership potential are not just planted but are given the support and resources needed to grow into strong, capable leaders.

2. Don’t Shout at the Crops

  • Strategy: Constructive Feedback and Open Dialogue

    • Our approach emphasizes constructive feedback and open dialogue. We encourage leaders to understand the unique challenges their teams face and to provide support rather than criticism. This approach helps in creating a positive environment where leaders can thrive and develop their skills without fear of failure.

3. Don’t Blame the Crop for Not Growing Fast Enough

  • Strategy: Setting Realistic Expectations and Patience

    • Behavioural change is a gradual process. Through LEAP, we work with our clients to set realistic expectations and to foster patience in the leadership development process. By celebrating small milestones and understanding that growth takes time, we help leaders avoid the trap of expecting instant results.

4. Don’t Uproot Crops Before They’ve Had a Chance to Grow

  • Strategy: Commitment to Long-Term Initiatives

    • LEAP programs emphasise long-term commitment. We partner with clients to see initiatives through, ensuring that strategies are given the time and attention needed to show results. This commitment prevents the premature abandonment of strategies and ensures that leadership potential is fully realised.

5. Choose the Best Plants for the Soil

  • Strategy: Tailored Leadership Development

    • Recognising that every organisation and leader is unique, our LEAP programs tailor development plans to the specific needs of the individual and the organisation. By choosing the best “plants” for the “soil,” we ensure that leadership development is aligned with the culture, values, and goals of the organisation.

6. Irrigate and Fertilize

  • Strategy: Continuous Support and Resources

    • Just as crops need water and nutrients, leaders need continuous support and resources to grow. LEAP provides ongoing learning opportunities, access to tools, and resources that leaders need to succeed. This continuous irrigation ensures that leadership development is sustained over time.

7. Remove Weeds

  • Strategy: Addressing Obstacles and Barriers

    • Negative influences and obstacles can hinder leadership growth. Through LEAP, we work with our clients to identify and remove these “weeds,” whether they are cultural issues, resistance to change, or other barriers. By creating a conducive environment, we help leaders focus on their development without distractions.

8. Prepare for Good and Bad Seasons

  • Strategy: Building Resilience and Adaptability

    • Leadership development isn’t always smooth sailing. There will be challenges, much like bad seasons in farming. LEAP programs focus on building resilience and adaptability in leaders, ensuring they are prepared to handle adversity and thrive in any situation.
